The Polar Express Lionel Train

Do you, or someone you know, love the holiday classic film, Polar Express?

My son was actually the first person in my family to see the film. They showed it to his class at school. From the first time he saw it he loved it. It wasn’t for another year or so later that my husband and I, as well as our daughter, had the opportunity to see it on TV. Ever since my whole family has been hooked on the film.

At first I thought he characters were not very cute (Santa looks a bit scary rather than jolly), but the theme of the story and the way it makes us feel after we watch it, makes it the perfect holiday movie. It’s also one of very few movies that my son will watch willingly (he’s not really into movies at all).

Many families place a train around their Christmas tree each year. We started putting a train under our tree when our daughter was around two years old (she’s 16 years old now). We had one train for a very long time but it stopped working correctly. So we went out and purchased another train. It was not as realistic as the original one (it was more cute than real looking) but it served it’s purpose well.

The perfect train for under the tree would be one just like the one in the movie Polar Express. Thanks to Lionel you CAN get the Polar Express for under your tree (and to enjoy year round!).

Lionel Trains has a Polar Express G-Gauge Train Set that will look amazing under your holiday tree, and to enjoy year round.

Lionel sent me a set to review. I was very surprised to see just how big the train is. I cannot wait to put this under our Christmas tree!

The set comes complete with track pieces, engine, coal car, passenger cars, caboose, remote control, conductor, boy and the hobo. The train as a whole is huge, as is the tracks.

Here are a few photos of my husband setting up the train.

To give you an idea of the size my husband is an average size (5′ 10″) and the black and white cat is average size too (about 12 pounds). You can see how bit the track is as well as the size of the train cars.

Set up was a breeze. Simply insert the batteries (it comes with batteries – yeah!) and snap together the track pieces. That’s it! Set up took just a few minutes and we were ready to play with our Polar Express train set.

I love how much detail they put into this set. From the engine to the caboose, and even the conductor, boy and hobo. The hobo even disappears just like he does in the movie, but in this case the roof of the train car has a little trap door that flips over to hide (or reveal) the hobo.

If you look carefully you can see shadows of people in the passenger cars too. No detail was left out of this great train set.

Hobo and boy – the even included his bon fire!

Lionel even thought to put the footprints in the snow. No detail was overlooked.

Caboose. I can almost see the children singing!

The train is controlled by a handheld remote control. It controls not only the train but the sound effects too. You can make the conductor shout “All aboard!” (in what sounds like Tom Hank’s voice who voiced the conductor in the movie) and the choo-choo-choo sounds.

I took a brief video so you can see and hear the train in action (it’s just a few seconds long).

Overall I think this is a beautiful set. My whole family loves it. We cannot wait to see it under our tree, especially when watching the movie.
